Anxiety disorders are actually one of the most common mental health issues and affect almost 30% of individuals around the world. The important thing to remember, though, is that anxiety disorders are normally treatable, and a growing number of effective treatment approaches have been developed with great success. This means that with the right treatment, people can go on to lead healthy and happy lives.
Whereas everyone will be familiar with feelings of anxiety, whether you are interviewing for a job that you really want or waiting for some important test results, it is important to recognise when anxiety is becoming problematic and beginning to overwhelm a person. If normal day-to-day activities start becoming anxiety-inducing and create a sense of fear and stress or even panic attacks, it is important to get help before it becomes too severe.
Feelings of anxiety are a part of who we are as humans, and are a natural response to actual or perceived threats to our well-being. When this anxiety evolves into something more persistent and potentially debilitating, then it can become an anxiety disorder. This could be a panic disorder, social anxiety disorder or generalized anxiety disorder, to name a few. Anxiety can also be a symptom of other mental health issues as well, such as trauma. At The Beekeeper we are well versed in all of the anxiety disorders and have extensive experience in their treatment and management.
Anxiety can manifest itself in fairly diverse ways, not just in our thoughts and feelings but also in our body as well. This stress can have a profound impact on our body and mind, some symptoms of anxiety are:
It is time to get help if anxiety has become an overwhelming part of your life. If you have one or more of the symptoms described, then it may well be time to get some help.
With around 30% of people having an anxiety disorder at some point in their life, there is a greater need to understand what the physical symptoms can be. Anxiety has an intense impact on the body, and can often be exhausting to live with. Some of the physical symptoms can be:
If your anxiety has taken over your life, it’s time to seek treatment. If you experience one or more of the listed symptoms, it might be time to seek some help.
Anxiety can look like many different things, to different people and impact us in diverse ways. One of the easier ways of thinking about anxiety is that it is on a spectrum, and we can move along that spectrum depending on numerous factors in our lives.
The more commonly known anxiety disorder is a generalized anxiety disorder, which is the most prevalent. Then panic disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, phobias and social anxiety disorder are also part of this broad spectrum.
Our team at The Beekeeper are equipped to help address this range of anxiety disorders. We also understand that they can manifest themselves in differing levels of severity, with some experiencing very high levels of anxiety that their lives become disrupted by it. This can range from panic attacks, a feeling of losing control, and a sense of continuous unease and stress. It can also be triggered and come in waves of intense feelings.
Types Of Anxiety Disorders
GAD is the most common of the anxiety disorders and is more common than many people realize. This state of chronic anxiety or stress can significantly impact the body, resulting in physical symptoms such as muscle tension and fatigue. As well as leading to issues with digestion and headaches. The symptoms are not just physical but also lead to a sense of irritability, stress, dread, fear and poor concentration. Waves of intense anxiety are not uncommon and can lead to panic attacks. These can be related to everyday situations such as work, family, travelling, money, or even what is in the news.
Social anxiety disorder is also sometimes called social phobia and is a long-term and overwhelming sense of fear of social situations that a person might face. In contrast to the sense of nervousness you might feel about meeting new people, SAD can lead to very real fear, anxiety and often avoidance of social situations.
Social anxiety disorder can manifest itself as an intense and persistent fear of being watched and being judged by people, or embarrassed in a given social situation. This fear can affect work settings, schooling, and many other daily activities.
As with other anxiety disorders, it is more common than people realize, with around 7-10% of people living with it globally. Social anxiety is, however, very treatable, with focused strategies for beginning to overcome social anxiety. This depends on your individual personality and needs and how much SAD affects your day-to-day life.
A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder that can cause an individual or person to experience extreme, or irrational fear about a certain situation, or a thing, such as an animal, a place, or a certain experience. A good example might be spiders, flying, being in a confined space, or the use of needles.
The fear that a person experiences is very real to them and can become overwhelming at times, even though it is considered irrational. At times this can also escalate to become obsessive in nature and become a dominant feature in a person’s life. Generally, people know that their fear is not necessarily warranted, but it remains very real to them.
A panic disorder can be very disruptive to a person’s life. The exact cause or genesis of a panic disorder are not fully understood. However, it is thought to be linked to a variety of causal factors. These include, but are not limited to, a traumatic event or a very stressful experience in a person’s life, which could include a bereavement of a loved one or a phase of life change.
Whereas panic disorder features intense feelings of anxiety, it can lead to a panic attack, and you get a wave of intense mental and physical symptoms. It can come on very quickly and for no obvious reason. They can be not only frightening for the person but also very distressing. Symptoms can include, sweating, racing heartbeat, headaches, chest pain, feeling nausea and faintness, a feeling of choking and a tight chest, to name a few. There is an effective treatment for panic disorder, with a combination of the right approaches.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder or OCD, is a fairly common mental health issue where a person demonstrates compulsive behaviours and also has ongoing obsessive thought patterns.
Common signs of OCD are living with unwanted thoughts or images entering a person’s mind that create feelings of unease, anxiety and distaste. The compulsion part is the person feeling the need or strong desire to engage either physically or mentally in repetitive behaviours to help relieve some of these unpleasant thoughts or patterns of thinking.
When talking about addiction issues, it is very common that individuals also live with some anxiety issues to a lesser or greater degree. That is not to say that people with anxiety disorders always have issues with addiction, they are however fairly commonly linked together or co-occurring. When we say co-occurring that means that a person has more than a specific diagnosis or set of issues that they need to address. In some cases, anxiety disorders can lead to addiction or substance misuse issues, as people can self-medicate with alcohol or other substances.
When we find that a person is coming to us with both issues around addiction and anxiety, we treat them as a whole and help the individual work through the issues that are interrelated and connected. We do this using our interdisciplinary approach to talk therapy as well as utilizing our mindfulness and movement program, to help clients begin the process of developing a sustainable program of recovery.
At The Beekeeper, we have a team of experts with extensive clinical experience working with anxiety disorders. We don’t take a singular approach; we see every client as an individual with unique and different needs. This enables us to better address the root causes that underpin an anxiety disorder and ensure each client’s needs are met.
Our approach is whole of body and mind. In the descriptions of how anxiety can manifest itself, there is significant emphasis on the physical symptoms of anxiety. This informs how we work with individuals, using the most up-to-date evidence-based approaches.
We use not only talk therapy approaches, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), and contemporary trauma approaches, to name a few, but also we enable clients to engage with their bodies more meaningfully to help aid the healing process. This is done through our daily mindfulness and movement program, which combines meditation practices, breath work, and different types of yoga and sound baths. These approaches are now well evidenced to be a key active ingredient in the recovery process from anxiety, and our experience has shown they can be transformative. This is also coupled with exercise to suit your needs, to help you release some of the tension held in the body and begin to regain some degree of physical fitness.
During your stay here, we will work with you to resolve the issues that have been compounded in your life that led you to treatment. We will also equip you with skills and grounding strategies to enable you to lead a life that is free of crippling anxiety and allow you to thrive and enjoy life to its fullest.
Our center has been designed to help bring calm and balance into our clients’ lives. The peaceful setting enables our expert clinical team to begin working with our clients on their anxiety treatment program. Our incredible facilities allow you the comfort and privacy you will need to begin to bring about the process of lasting change and clarity in your life.
As one of the leading centers treating anxiety, we fully understand that people experience it differently. As such, our program is tailored to your specific needs, as we recognise individual differences and see them as critical in achieving optimal outcomes for our clients when addressing anxiety.
This personalized approach will allow you to address the specific causes that characterize your set of issues and help us to co-create a program of care and support for you based on three key aspects. Our approach is based on compassion and driven by expertise and a desire to see our clients leave our care and move towards leading a happier, more balanced life where you’re able to manage everyday stress with ease.
Each day with us is varied, although we do maintain a balance of structure and free time. We begin every day with a mindfulness activity to welcome the day. There are a number of activities clients will then engage in, some are more focused on self-care, such as massage, physical training and Muay Thai. Or individual therapy, group work or therapy, as well as more mindfulness activities such as meditation and yoga. On the weekends, you will be able to go on excursions and enjoy the highlights of Northern Thailand.
