Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a commonly used talk therapy (psychotherapy) for treating various mental health conditions. CBT focuses on changing your thoughts and feelings surrounding certain behaviours, helping you improve them over time.
At The Beekeeper House, our trained therapists use an eclectic approach to therapy that blends evidence-based clinical psychology practices, including CBT. Our residential programmes use these methods to address mental health conditions, including addiction, anxiety, and depression.
If you or a loved one are looking for CBT or other treatment based in the beautiful country of Thailand, give us a call today.
Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) is defined as, “psychotherapy that combines cognitive therapy with behaviour therapy by identifying faulty or maladaptive patterns of thinking, emotional response, or behaviour and substituting them with desirable patterns of thinking, emotional response, or behaviour.”
CBT is a mixture of cognitive therapy — which is based on the idea that thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are interconnected — and behavioural therapy, which is based on changing the behaviours driven by your thoughts and feelings. There are a few different types of CBT that can be used to help address different aspects of thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. These include:
DBT focuses on regulating emotions and mindfulness while addressing disruptive thoughts and behaviours.
REBT helps identify negative thinking patterns and provides new ways to manage them.
CBT focuses on conversations between you and a specially trained therapist. During your sessions, you will talk about your thought patterns and feelings surrounding troubling experiences or aspects of your life. Typically, these are related to mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, or addiction. Your therapist then talks about these thoughts and feelings and how they relate to your problematic or disruptive behaviours. They then offer strategies to help address constructive changes to your thoughts, which then helps you change your behaviours.
Here at The Beekeeper House, we harness the power of CBT to help you make lasting, significant changes. We use an eclectic approach to therapy that combines aspects of clinical psychology — including CBT — along with other holistic approaches. We tailor treatment plans to your specific needs, addressing the underlying thoughts and behaviours driving your condition. We recommend a minimum 35-day stay in our residential programs. This ensures you have the time to develop the necessary techniques and skills from CBT and our other therapies for use in your day-to-day life.
In our residential program, CBT is integrated throughout your daily schedule in the form of individual therapy sessions and recovery assignments (homework). After completing a short-term residential program, you will be able to focus on recovery and integrating the skills and techniques learned in CBT into your daily life. You will learn skills including but not limited to:
When first starting CBT, you may feel overwhelmed or anxious about confronting your thoughts, feelings, or emotions. This can be especially true for anyone who has never been to therapy before. At The Beekeeper House, we create safe, comfortable spaces that allow you to be open and honest with your therapist. Being vulnerable during this journey sets you up for the best chance at success.
During your first CBT session, your therapist will ask you what you would like to specifically work on. This conversation will set the foundation for your future sessions. You will also talk about your overall health and well-being, which lets your therapist know what else is going on in your life. CBT is a collaborative effort between you and your therapist, so be sure to ask questions and get advice from them to make the most of your sessions. Together, you are on your healing journey.
CBT is used to treat several mental health conditions, including:
Emotions are often difficult to directly change; CBT was developed by psychologists to instead address the underlying thoughts and behaviours that contribute to emotions. Through conversations with a therapist trained in CBT, you can address these emotions in new ways. They may help you:
Many people think of talk therapy as open sessions where a patient is free to discuss whatever is on their mind. However, CBT follows a much more rigid structure driven by identifying problems and learning new skills to solve them. CBT often requires a large commitment of time and effort to be successful.
With this, it is important to be open and honest with your therapist, and you must be willing to put in the work required — including homework and introspection (thinking about your thoughts and feelings). Your therapist is there to provide the support and guidance you need, and actively collaborating with them will help drive your recovery and healing.
At The Beekeeper House, we incorporate CBT techniques into several of our addiction treatment programs to address your specific needs. Using our integrated approach, we also focus on Eastern philosophies that connect the body, mind, and spirit to aid in healing and recovery. These include yoga and movement classes, meditation, massages, and sound baths.
